SPGA and DSPGA carry expanded pressure ratings https://www.conaxtechnologies.com/2021/12/16/spga-and-dspga-carry-catalog-pressure-ratings/ Thu, 16 Dec 2021 09:00:51 +0000 http://www.conaxtechnologies.com/?p=10715

Higher pressure ratings than standard split seal fittings

Conax Technologies now offers split seal fittings with pressure ratings that are higher than typical ratings achieved with our legacy SPG and DSPG multi-hole split compression seal fittings.

Conax SPGA and DSPGA fittings are our first multi-hole split seal fittings that carry both hydraulic and pneumatic catalog pressure ratings. SPGA assemblies seal on multiple elements with a single split, and DSPGA assemblies seal on multiple elements with a double split.

Because these fittings carry catalog pressure ratings, there’s no need to consult the factory when your application falls within the catalog ratings and no need for users to develop their own torque values and associated pressure ratings.

A tighter fitting on the body and elements

The amount of compressive load transmitted from the cap to the load-bearing washer, follower, sealant, and seat set is higher with our SPGA and DSPGA fittings. This creates higher sealing pressures that result in a tighter seal on the fitting body and elements.

The SPGA and DSPGA feature split seats, split sealants, and split followers—now with integral pins. So the sealants can be easily changed without removing the elements from the fitting. Viton, Lava and Grafoil sealants are available.

Why the United States Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) is so important https://www.conaxtechnologies.com/2021/11/04/why-the-united-states-innovation-and-competition-act-usica-is-so-important/ Thu, 04 Nov 2021 09:00:17 +0000 http://www.conaxtechnologies.com/?p=10614

Increasing domestic chip manufacturing in the U.S. will help with competitiveness and create jobs

In June, the U.S. Senate passed the United States Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) to help increase U.S. domestic semiconductor manufacturing by providing funding for Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) America Act.

The bipartisan bill aims to enhance competitiveness in the U.S. by promoting American science and technology leadership.

A recent Electronics 360 article provides details on why USICA matters. According to the article, “The share of global semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the U.S. has fallen from 37% in 1990 to just 12% today, according to the SIA. This decline is due to foreign countries offering substantial subsidies to global competitors to build new fabs. This placed the U.S. at a competitive disadvantage in attracting new construction of chip fabs.”

At the same time, the U.S. accounted for 55% of total semiconductor sales worldwide in 2020. If nothing is done to correct the disparity, U.S. manufacturing could fall to just 10% of the world’s chips in the next decade.

As with so many industries, supply chain issues in the semiconductor industry were laid bare during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the majority of semiconductor manufacturing taking place in Taiwan, Korea and China. When lockdowns and stay-at-home orders caused factories to close temporarily, it impacted the entire industry.

Supply chain vulnerabilities combined with decreased U.S. chip production forced the Biden administration, U.S. Congress, trade organizations and U.S. companies to call for increased funding for domestic chip manufacturing.

Read the full article here to get details on how USICA is projected to help bring new fabs to the U.S., increase chip manufacturing in the United States, and impact American job growth.

Semiconductors forecasted to account for 20% of vehicle costs by 2030 https://www.conaxtechnologies.com/2021/10/21/semiconductors-forecasted-to-account-for-20-of-vehicle-costs-by-2030/ Thu, 21 Oct 2021 09:00:55 +0000 http://www.conaxtechnologies.com/?p=10602

Increased demand and a migration to advanced processes driving costs up

According to new research from Intel Corp, semiconductors are forecasted to account for more than 20% of the total premium vehicle bill of materials (BOM) by 2030. A recent article at Electronics 360 provided details on the increase that represents a five times growth rate over 2019’s 4% figure.

In addition to the automotive industry, growth in markets such as cloud-to-edge infrastructure, industrial, artificial intelligence (AI), and the internet of things is predicted to contribute to a 5% increase in the growth of semiconductors over the next decade.

This increased demand has stimulated efforts to build new semiconductor fabs in the near term and redoubled efforts to increase domestic U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and reduce reliance on Asian suppliers.

While most automotive chips are currently manufactured using legacy process technologies, changes are underway to migrate to more advanced process technologies.

Tech giants rushing to develop their own chips https://www.conaxtechnologies.com/2021/10/12/tech-giants-rushing-to-develop-their-own-chips/ Tue, 12 Oct 2021 11:28:27 +0000 http://www.conaxtechnologies.com/?p=10584

With standard chips in high demand, Big Tech firms are developing their own semiconductors

A recent article at cnbc.com detailed the efforts of tech giants like Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Tesla and Baidu to bring some aspects of chip development in-house, rather than rely on standard chips that are in high demand.

According to sources quoted in the article, the move enables companies to develop custom-made chips that fit their specific application requirements and gives them more control over the integration of software and hardware.

The global chip shortage and ongoing supply chain issues have accelerated the chip design projects at many Big Tech companies, including the development of custom AI chips.

Currently, none of the tech giants are looking to take on all aspects of chip development on their own. The focus is on the design and performance of the chip, rather than costly manufacturing.
